Spring Has Sprung… A Vintage Spring Break Look

Hey y’all! I know it has been forever since I have posted an outfit of the day, but things have been crazy around here! Not only have I been super busy with class and work and life in general, but it seems like it hasn’t stopped raining in weeks! However, today marks the third day of spring break and it is sunny with temperatures in the 70s! Dominic and I are headed to Kansas City for a few days of much needed vacation and I am feeling roadtrip ready in this head-to-toe vintage outfit, featuring the most amazing pair of shorts ever! I mean, come on, not only are they vintage Levi’s but they have horses on them and are perfect for pattern mixing. This is definitely one of my favorite outfits to date, so check it out below!

Alligator Food Means “I Love You”

2014 was the year of dreams for me! I started this wonderful blog, which has grown tremendously in the last few months, was in my first Art Gallery Show and most importantly, my first craft show, with my wonderful company Alligator Food Design! I grew up going to craft shows, antique shows, clothesline fairs, etc. all over the state. There was something about them that completely fascinated me. As I grew up and decided to pursue art, I knew I wanted to own a small business, but I didn’t exactly know how to start. Enter, The Little Craft Show.

In the past 5 years or so, “indie” craft shows have taken off. Now, shows are no longer for southern women and hippies, but they extend to and attract people from all walks of life. This rise in popularity, is directly correlated to the popularity of Etsy, which not only was a huge tool for makers, made handmade goods more accessible to everyday people, without requiring a major life-change on their end. Now I could go on and on about craft-shows, Etsy and even makers themselves, but for the sake of time, let’s just skip to the good stuff.

Ever since The 2014 Little Craft Show, my dream business has taken off! I am now shipping products nationwide and connecting with all kinds of people along the way! It has been a dream come true, and I am confident that one day my dream of being a full-time maker will be realized. In celebration of my little dream’s growth I am highlighting a few of my favorite items in today’s post! Scroll down for Alligator Food Design’s current calendar and a special discount code!

If you mouth “Alligator Food” it looks like you’re saying “I love you”

Bee mine, Valentine

First off, I’ll admit that I have never really been one of those girls who loved Valentine’s Day, but there is something about lace and tulle that makes my heart skip a beat. Throw in the fact that my boyfriend was home for the first time all semester and I am all for the candy hearts and pink cupcakes, so why not celebrate that? The last three years haven’t been perfect. Far from it actually. Dating long distance is hard, it’s sad and basically, it sucks. However, this guy proves to me (almost) everyday that it’s worth it. Dominic is stubborn, sassy and sometimes a huge pain in the ass, but he is also one of the kindest, most caring individuals I have ever met. He is there through thick and thin and most importantly, he always keeps me laughing. We make it work, cause like Dom says: “If you’re lucky enough to find someone who puts up with all of your shit, you stick with them.”

So here’s to balloons, cupcakes, tulle skirts and love. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Hope this post wasn’t too hard for you all to read!

My heart’s on my socks… A casual look for Valentine’s Day

I admit it, my last look was a little over the top, however, don’t let my overly girly get-up scare you from celebrating V-Day in style. For those of you who don’t want an outfit quite as flashy as mine, today’s look is a subtler take on the typical Valentine’s Day outfit, but it’s not without it’s own bit of romantic flare. The key to achieving this is all in the accessories. For about $6 (thanks Forever 21!) my everyday look got shot with Cupid’s arrow! Check out the pictures below, and let me know how you will be celebrated Valentine’s Day! So, will your look be all out or are retro heart socks more your style?

8 Looks to Set You Apart on Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, people all over are trying to make dinner reservations and/or find the perfect gift. I have spent the last couple days working on the PERFECT card for my boyfriend, the last couple of weeks apart have been particularly hard on us and to save money we have decided to not buy each other gifts this year (however, if he asks I have a list of things he could buy me). Anyway, I wanted to put some real brainpower into making something that will not only remind him just how amazing he is, but most importantly make him laugh.  Yet, I would totally be lying if I said I didn’t put just as much effort into finding the perfect V-Day outfit. Like usual, I have spent most of my class days browsing Pinterest for some Valentine’s inspiration and after hours of scouring my favorite stores I have put together the perfect ensemble, which I will reveal to you all in a couple of weeks. Since, there is still plenty of time for express shipping, I have decided to share some of my favorite pins to aid you in your own search for a classy and romantic outfit.

 Black Tulle Skirt

Tulle for Valentine’s Day. It’s obviously classic, girly and romantic, but it may be a little overdone. If you’re as obsessed and addicted to the tulle skirt as I am, surprise them with an all black tulle look. It’s unexpected, a little sexy and completely stunning! You’ll turn heads as soon as you walk into the room. No one said black can’t be romantic. Black wedding dresses are even and up and coming trend! So what are you waiting for? Go get ’em stunner!

Full Floral Skirt

Feeling more classic this Valentine’s dat? Give them some true vintage romance with a light floral and airy piece. A dress or skirt with a voluptuous silhouette calls upon better and simpler times. These romantic looks are perfect for a dinner date and maybe even a stroll through the local park, weather permitting of course. However, you’ll look like a dream no matter what the occasion.

Lace Top

Whether you have reservations for a candlelit dinner or you’d rather cook a meal at home, the lace top is perfect for you! Dress it down with a pair of jeans and you’ll be ready for a Valentine’s Day in, or add a beautiful skirt for a night in. Whatever your feeling, a lace skirt is a perfect way to show Cupid you’re ready for love.

Graphic Sweatshirt

Tell them exactly how you feel with a graphic sweatshirt on V-Day. It’s a more casual take on the day’s usual attire, but that doesn’t make it any less chic. Regardless of if your sweatshirt is paired with a feminine skirt or boyfriends jeans, you are ready for dinner and a movie. But, if you’re like me, you can take your sweatshirt straight to the couch for a Netflix marathon with your “person,” which we all know is the preferable option.

Kinda Sorta… Felt Art DIY

Not to long ago I saw this adorable DIY on Brit+Co. It seemed super quick, cute and easy, so I decided to make my own version for my weekly Sunday Night DIY. $15 and an hour and a half later, I had a brand new piece of art for my living room wall! Read below to see how I did this DIY:

What You’ll Need:

1) Felt in various colors ($.50 per sheet at Hobby Lobby)

2) 4 pieces of thin wood or canvas (12×12 for $3.99 at Hobby Lobby)

3) Pushpins

4) Scissors

5) Hot Glue Gun

6) Printed letter template (I chose to use 300pt font)

Step 1: Cut out letters in large general blocks like in the following image:

Step 2: Use pushpins to attach the letters to the pieces of felt. Make sure to use multiple points of attachment to keep the paper and felt from moving while you cut the letters out.

Step 3: Cut out the felt letters following the lines of the printed letters.

Step 4: Hot glue the letters on the boards, aligning the left edges and utilizing white space.

Step 5: Simply hang the boards on the wall and voila! You now have a personalized typographic art piece to show off!
